It can range from feeling nothing, or very little, to moderate discomfort for 1-2 seconds as the marrow is being aspirated. I have had three and the most I can say is that I had some muscle soreness for a few days after the first one. It is far more important to know what is going on in your marrow, as it may dictate a change in treatment. In comparison to the battle we are fighting, I do not see it as anything to be concerned about submitting to.

Do you have a diagnosis? If it is cancer, then it is critical to know if it has invaded your bone marrow. This is important to stage your disease. Yet, if it is a lymphoma, even hearing "stage 4" and "bone marrow involvement" is not as bad as it sounds. Lymphoma is a blood-borne cancer and does not form solid tumors as other cancers do. It flows in the blood and that is right where the treatment is placed, so it is in the path of the chemo or other medicine. As well, the tumors are basically clumps of individual lymphoma cells, versus the almost living organs that solid tumors are. Here is a link to information sheets regarding the various types of lymphoma: http://www.lymphoma.org/site/apps/ka/ct/contactus.asp?c=bkLTKaOQLmK8E&b=6300115&en=guKPI0OQJfIMI4NMKaKUJiP0JlJPJaOVJhLXJjN2LyG
As to prognosis, we each form our own prognosis and looking at the web may become depressing. My prognosis was poor in 2008. It dropped to "very poor" in early 2009 when my disease immediately relapsed. Yet, miracles do happen and my scans from Monday last week are clear, with no evidence of disease. Keep your chin up and here are the only two rules:

1. Don't panic.
2. Don't give up.

All the best to you on your journey, and we are here for you.

i have just been dx with large b cell non hodgkins. i have been told that the cure rate is good. i am optomistic, and anxious to get started. chemo will begin next week after the port is in. i feel pretty good, except for annoying headaches. actually, my last day of work is tomorrow, so that will help me to relax. thanks for asking, and i am glad you have that good news to share

Hey there...A bone marrow is deffinately needed to see if it has gone there because the treatment is an additional step added to treat bone marrow. I also have the same dx. Cure rate is very good but not if they don't check your bone marrow. I have had 2 marror tests and all with no sedation. They will sedate you if you ask early before your appt. is actually upon you. Several people I know have had sedation. Thinking about it I guess I would ask for it if there is a next time! Keep us posted Good Luck!

Sending hugs and prayers your way for strength and peace of mind...

thank you for your advice. i also have diffuse large cell lymphoma.i cant believe that you also are fighting breast cancer, its not bad enough to have lymphoma!!. it makes me so angry, but i wish i knew who to be mad at! i was dx with melonoma in 2005. had a wide excision and it was over and gone. i know this sounds nuts, but its almost like somebody is out to get me. i cant believe you have been going thru this since 1980. ridiclous!

Ya It has been a long trip but between cancers I have managed to take the attitude of it is what it is and move on. No so easy with this one it kinda kicked the bricks out from under me, so it's taking me alot longer to get my strength back. And maybe this is the new me...who knows. I am just trying to decide myself! One way or the other I will move on

Hey there, good question for a very necessary procedure. If you are concerned about possible pain ask for light sedation, (which actually takes longer to do than the actual BM bio) I have light sedation because I have very dense ones in the area they take the samples from. I have had five in the past three years. Because I had a small % in my bone and I am doing W&W we are keeping an eye on it. Oddly enough I went to 0% on my fourth one but by the 5th one it had returned, but again, less than 4%. They will not even treat until I get to 30% as long as I have no other nodes involved.
You said your DX was large B cell, did they give you a subtype such as Diffused large B cell? Are you having any B Symptoms and do you know what node areas are involved from your scans? All this makes a difference on treatment decisions. If it is Diffused, there are very good cure rates as it responds quickly to treatment.

You need to do this BM test, just ask for the light sedation, they don't care either way, and it will make you worry less. Remember through all of this you need to be your best advocate, if you hurt tell them, if you fill sick tell them, not that you will so don't assume anything, but defiantly speak up for yourself. We are here for you anytime,
Welcome hugs, KB

Good luck, Friday on the BM bio. Anger is a normal reaction, so this is a good place to vent and gain some type of perspective on it all. Once you get your treatment going you will have something to apply that anger towards and that will help, then you will be ale to also have a sense of regaining control over your life, and a future. We all changed and are still changing, give yourself time to adjust and be kind to yourself. The stress of all this is huge so rest when you can and surround yourself with as much positive stuff and people as you can vs. negative and people who want to share cancer horror stories with you. They don't help.
Take care and let us know how you are doing,
Hugs, kb
