Hey KB55, I hadn't been on this discussion before. I don't always come to the site, but am trying to stay off of the computer a bit as I was spending waaayy too much time on it. Thanks for inquiring!
My dad "would have" been 88 yrs old today this being his birthday. His now deceased brother was in Pearl Harbor. We also heard many of those stories growing up.Lots of soups and breads at our house too.God bless
Sun is out so we should warm up to low 50's. coats are off the horses and I busted the ice off the trough. Time for another hot cup. Should get out in the studio after lunch, can't wait to start plastering and putting stones on the Nativity wall. Anyone else use photo bucket? Sign up yesterday when I looked at Andy and Snowball's photo, awesome by the way.
OK funniest thing I ever heard on a conference call. joe was on a conference call a minute ago and all of a sudden these ladies who had been giving a report started laughing, in the background you could hear one of the other people snoring loudly, at first they all thought it was a joke, but it turned out to be real, I could hear them snoring downstairs, lol! Joe said, " I guess this is their way of saying we should end this call!!! "
I'M here....yawn... I brought those cookies I told you about, the one's my gdaughter and I made over the weekend, oh, I forgot the the brownies in the back seat...BRB.
Almost fell back to sleep- I'm a night owl that's trying to take baby steps to reorganize and gain back my life, atoning for sleeping all day yesterday; it was great!
Yes! Thank you to all the nurses and docs and service personnel who served and gave their lives for us. My grandfather was a Warden in the same town that I now live in, and would tell of the blackouts and sirens and how he would patrol our community with a steel helmet, a bicycle and flashlight. I loved hearing those stories. They made the best of a scary situation with dances at the hall that now serves as our firedept. They raised sheep, so I'm sure a lot of bartering went on there!
Okay, my latte' is cool enough to drink..thanks for the invite K! Brownie?
Sure I'll have a cup with you. Duncan is still being an ass and not openly talking to anyone. Here's a story to share...
My dad was a horseman, could easily have been considered a horse whisperer. He was in the US Cavalry Reserves. Shortly before WW II, war games between a division of cavalry against an armored division were schedule at Camp Douglas, Wisconsin to determine if the horse cavalry would be continued to be used as an active fighting force.
Early into the war games, the armored division headquarters was captured and the horse cavalry won. My dad was instrumental in discovering the armored headquarters location, including spending a good portion of a night lying in a muddy culvert that the armored division crossed.
Even though the horse cavalry won the games, the powers that be in Washington had already made the decision of disband the cavalry as a fighting unit and convert the soldiers to an armored division. When that happened, there were a very limited number of discharges that could be given to horse cavalry soldiers. My dad got one of them because my oldest brother had just been born and there weren't many other family men in his unit. The armored unit he would have been with had a high mortality rate through the war. Probably would have done much better with horses.

I know I said to leave politics out of this but I have to give a huge hug out to our remaining WWII vets as this is 70th Anninversery of Pearl Harbor. Thank you all for your gift of service and sacrifice. You changed the world for the better, again thank you all.
in my house growing up in a military family we were always reminded what happened on Dec. 7th. We were also told throughout the year what it was like during those war years as both my parents were teenagers during that time. It shaped who they were as adults. I recall my mother always telling us how much each item of food cost on our dinner plate, then she would total it up and say how much it would cost in a restaurant. She would then add a story or two about what they ate during the rationing days, how they traded stamps for different things, how her father would sent her down to the butcher store for dog bones that she would take home and he would make wonderful soups. My mother gave me such a love of history and was such a good story teller. She even sang on the radio with two other girl friends during the war, so she taught my sister and I all those songs. :)
SLL/CLL IV A W&W "I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, to give you a future and a hope." Jeremiah 29:11
